“One Way or Another” – Blondie

One way or another I’m gonna find ya
I’m gonna getcha getcha getcha getcha
One way or another I’m gonna win ya
I’m gonna getcha getcha getcha getcha

One way or another I’m gonna see ya
I’m gonna meetcha meetcha meetcha meetcha
One day, maybe next week
I’m gonna meetcha, I’m gonna meetcha, I’ll meetcha
I will drive past your house
And if the lights are all down
I’ll see who’s around

One way or another I’m gonna find ya
I’m gonna getcha getcha getcha getcha
One way or another I’m gonna win ya
I’ll getcha, I’ll getcha

One way or another I’m gonna see ya
I’m gonna meetcha meetcha meetcha meetcha
One day, maybe next week
I’m gonna meetcha, I’ll meetcha

And if the lights are all out
I’ll follow your bus downtown
See who’s hanging out

One way or another I’m gonna lose ya
I’m gonna give you the slip, a slip of the lip or another
I’m gonna lose ya, I’m gonna trick ya, I’ll trick ya
One way or another I’m gonna lose ya
I’m gonna trick ya trick ya trick ya trick ya
One way or another I’m gonna lose ya
I’m gonna give you the slip

I’ll walk down the mall
Stand over by the wall
Where I can see it all
Find out who ya call
Lead you to the supermarket checkout
Some specials and rat food, get lost in the crowd

One way or another I’m gonna getcha, I’ll getcha, I’ll getcha getcha getcha getcha
(Where I can see it all, find out who ya call)
One way or another I’m gonna getcha, I’ll getcha, I’ll getcha getcha getcha getcha
(Where I can see it all, find out who ya call)
One way or another I’m gonna getcha, I’ll getcha, I’ll getcha getcha getcha getcha

“Disclosure” (film)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

“Disclosure” is a 1994 thriller directed by Barry Levinson, starring Michael Douglas and Demi Moore. It is based on Michael Crichton‘s novel of the same name.

The cast also includes Donald SutherlandRosemary Forsyth and Dennis Miller. As in so many of Levinson’s films – from Diner (1982) to Liberty Heights (1999), Ralph Tabakin appears, this time as an Elevator Attendant.

The film is a combination mystery and thriller about office politics and intrigue in the computer industry in the mid-1990s. The main focus of the story, from which the film and book take their titles, is the issue of sexual harassment. The film invites viewers to critically examine topics such as the ease with which allegations of sexual harassment can destroy one’s career and whether a double standard exists when such allegations are levied by men or women.

————————————————————————-

The film is set in the mid 1990s – at a time when computers were still emerging as part of the new-age revolutionary, contemporary technology in the world. It is a time when being designated as an I.T. professional was deemed a high academic qualification & when being part of the computer industry, on the whole, was being part of a prestigious and respected minority community in society.

Tom Sanders (Michael Douglas) is the Head of Manufacturing and a brilliant executive; he works for, “DigiCom” – a leading computer software firm based in Seattle, Washington. DigiCom is all set to launch its brand-new, virtual reality-based data storage system that is expected to revolutionize the computer industry, as it was known then. Bob Garvin (Donald Sutherland), the owner of the company is in the midst of negotiating a merger that could bring the company a ‘whopping’ $ 100 million dollars. After the successful completion of the merger, Garvin hopes to retire and be able to live the rest of his life in style and luxury. It is thus in the best interests of all concerned that the merger goes through without any unnecessary delays, problems or hitches.

Tom Sanders is a happily married man with two young children; he nurses big hopes for a promotion to the ‘top brass’ of his company. To his utter horror, shock and disappointment, he watches himself being superseded for the top post by a woman – a woman from another plant with whom he had had a torrid affair in his bachelor days. His new boss is operations executive, Meredith Johnson (Demi Moore) – she is an extremely seductive, svelte and highly attractive woman who knows how to get ahead in the “game” of the cut-throat, competitive world by using her husky voice, her alluring charms. She is never beyond using her sex-appeal and fantastic body shamelessly to get what she wanted. She is a ruthless, devious and manipulative temptress – she is as dangerous as she is ambitious. She has no scruples in “trampling the feet” of more worthy and diligent competitors than herself – she does what she considers to be important to stay in the lead position in a corporate world where unscrupulousness and deceit are the essential names of the game.

Tom Sanders is a handsome ‘hunk’ who has the reputation for being a playboy with a roving eye for anything that moves in a skirt. He is known to be a notorious womanizer and a flirt. It is the uncontested opinion of most of his colleagues that one is more likely to catch Tom red-handed in the throes of a passionate sexual act, with his trousers lying in a heap around his ankles on the floor than one is ever to find him as being “chaste” with his trousers worn correctly at his waist. As you are all aware, It is never a positive sign to be the recipient of such a low and biased reputation. In the current context, a lot of his colleagues found Sanders to be frivolous, flippant, irresponsible, immature and unreliable. This is their opinion – we do not know the truth of the matter – YET.

Garvin introduces Meredith, the new, glamorous boss to her subordinates. Co-workers like Mark Lewyn (Dennis Miller) comment to Tom on how attractive Meredith is. Others like Chief Financial Officer, Stephanie Kaplan (Rosemary Forsyth) seem to be aware that Tom and Meredith had a relationship in the past. Very late that same evening, Meredith invites Sanders to come into her office to have a face-to-face discussion on the problems in the functioning of DigiCom’s new advanced CD-ROM drive – being manufactured in Malaysia. The whole set-up was made to appear as if this was a premeditated, clandestine meeting between former lovers.

In the guise of making herself feel relaxed, after a tiring and stressful day at work, Meredith insinuates innocently to Sanders if he remembers about how much he used to enjoy giving her a shoulder massage. She invites him, in her seductive and husky voice, to start doing exactly that.  Tom obeys her orders and starts massaging her shoulders. As time passes, Sanders realizes the malevolent intentions of his new boss because she starts engaging in passionate and aggressive sex with him – despite the fact that she knows he is a family man. Tom is suddenly overtaken by sharp qualms of guilt and shame – he tries to protest several times against this physical onslaught. He realizes too late that he has fallen into a trap and feels sure of “breaking many bones” unless he can wiggle out of this horrid situation. Meredith takes no notice whatsoever of his many protestations – she only stops her sexual ministrations and advances when Sanders physically pushes her to the floor in violence and disgust. Sanders storms out of his boss’s office in a fit of fury and is overcome by humiliation and helplessness at this blatant manipulation and power ploys used by his boss to effectively get him dismissed – in disgrace – from the company.

The next day, Sanders discovers that Meredith has alleged sexual harassment against him to the directors of DigiCom. Tom’s colleagues refuse to believe his protestations of innocence, given his current reputation and the company pressures him to accept a reassignment to the company’s Austin office. Tom is not keen to shift base to Austin. Sanders fears losing his stock options if he shifts to Austin – he feels it would ruin any hopes of possible advancement in his career and such a move would most definitely ruin his family, financially and emotionally, in the long run. He finds himself ‘stuck in a tight spot’ – it is a “take it or leave it” ultimatum from his employer. Tom is left in a severe dilemma and quandary. He despairs of ever being able to prove that he has been in “the Right” all along.

The situation seems to be totally hopeless – thus, Tom is rather surprised when he receives an anonymous e-mail from someone identified only as “A Friend”. It directs him to appoint the Seattle attorney, Catherine Alvarez (Roma Maffia), who specializes in sexual harassment cases. With the help of his intelligent and shrewd attorney, Tom counter-sues DigiCom; alleging that Meredith is the one who sexually harassed him, in the first place. Concrete evidence is produced that supports Tom’s innocence and refutes Meredith’s testimony before a court mediator.

Meredith pretends being teary-eyed and leaves the room in a fit of fury. She has been effectively proved as being a liar and a cheat – enough concrete proof has been brought forward to show convincingly that she is nothing short of a scoundrel. She falls into her own trap sown by the threads of her own connivance and deviousness. One lie produces many, many other lies – it becomes a vicious circle of untruths and half-truths. This was the first step in her downfall. However, as you can well imagine, Meredith was not about to tolerate this kind of insubordination from her junior staff member; she plots the downfall of Sanders secretly. She will not rest till she has had him dismissed from his job. It would also help in putting down a fierce competitor for her position – she needed to do something and it had to be done soon.

The company is forced, in the current circumstances, to reinstate Sanders and they give him with a large pay raise, as compensation. Tom is triumphant at his new-found success but then he receives yet another anonymous e-mail from “A Friend” warning him that all is not what it seems to be – he still needs to solve the problem. Sanders abandons his complacent attitude and starts making private investigations of his own to unravel the truth behind these false allegations and the slander of his name. He needs to be very, very careful – he cannot afford to be caught in a trap yet again.

Sanders finds out that Meredith and Garvin’s assistant, Philip Blackburn (Dylan Baker), had weakened the quality control specifications at the Malaysian plant, in order to cut costs. The changes resulted in severe defects in the drive and Meredith and Phil are planning to make Tom the “fall-guy” – he will become the scapegoat to take the fall since this would be seen as a manufacturing defect that Tom should have rectified by now.  A show-down, on a grand scale, is planned at a conference scheduled to take place the next day, just before the merger is made public knowledge. Sanders – head of the manufacturing unit – would be publicly humiliated and would be made to look totally incompetent, irresponsible and careless. The company would have every good reason to “fire” him from the job. It seemed to be such an excellent, fool-proof plan – one way or another it would be a “win-win” situation for DigiCom. But the reality is never so easy or fallible, is it? Sometimes, even the best-laid plans can fall apart. Getting a plan together, in theory, may make the idea seem to be convincing and invincible – the practicalities always tell a different story.

Tom is unable to access the company computer system to seek confirmation of this complicity because Meredith has locked him out of the program. He spends a tense and frantic night before getting the information through a Virtual Reality demonstration machine left in the hotel room of executives from the merging company, with help from a colleague who owes him a favor. The next morning, Meredith is dumb-struck with horror when the very memos that she had authorized and signed spell her undoing. Instead of Sanders being fired from the job, it is Meredith who is asked to leave immediately. As she is escorted out of the conference room, she proclaims, in a shrill and accusatory tone that it is Tom who is actually to blame in this situation and that the evidence is a last-ditch effort of revenge for trying to expose him.

Tom thinks that this decision will put him back in the forefront of the competition for a likely promotion to head DigiCom but Garvin, once again bypasses Tom and chooses Stephanie Kaplan as his successor instead. Disappointed once more, Tom hesitates, for just a moment, before he joins in the general, enthusiastic applause. It occurs to him that Kaplan’s son Spencer, a research assistant to Professor Arthur Friend – to whose computer Tom traced his ‘Friend’- could very well be the “friend” responsible for helping him, with hints of the situation, via e-mail. Spencer gives him a knowing look and Tom’s suspicions are confirmed. WHEN GOD CLOSES A DOOR, SOMEWHERE HE OPENS A WINDOW.

In the end, Tom is left in no better position than he found himself at the beginning of the film. He just wants to get on with his life with the minimum of fuss and bother after this very narrow escape. He is left musing over the fact that two women (his attorney and his new boss, Kaplan) were largely instrumental in saving him from certain disaster, humiliation and a fall from grace. It makes us imagine that he has finally decided to respect the true worth of the female race.

POWER is a seat of authority akin to a throne of a king; people who occupy such a seat are those who stand (or rather sit) in a position of authority from which position they can very well “demand” respect, humility and obedience. The acquisition of Power is widely sought after throughout the world till this day; people have been known to kill for it. It has made many people resort to making false allegations against another and even more in ruthlessly slandering another’s good name and reputation. Power is like a powerful shot of Scotch whisky – it is best drunk “neat.” It is the most addictive narcotic known to Man – it is more intoxicating and addictive than all the “uppers” in the world. The acquisition of Power gives one a sense of immediate exhilaration, vitality and euphoria, unlike any other addiction to a drug – it enforces a sense of ecstasy, equal to a sexual orgasm. People have become so intensely shameless and so disgustingly unscrupulous in the ways in which they choose to “promote” themselves; “through hook or by crook” that it is hardly a time for celebration. Few people realize that Respect and Obedience cannot be demanded – it is to be earned, just like everything else. It is not bought cheaply – it is always a case of, “no pain; no gain.”

People tend to look at the acquisition of Power in two very disparate ways – the wiser of the two people, will take the time to appreciate her true worth and value. They will respect Power and in turn, Power, like the unfailing devotion of a faithful dog, will repay such people with her undying loyalty and love. She will bless their homes and families with ‘Plenty’ and the Best of Everything because such people tend to be simple souls who respect Power for what she represents. Such benevolent people will use Power correctly and graciously; rarely will you ever see them misusing or abusing her.

Then there are always the brash, snobbish and boastful lot (the so-called, “nouveau riche”) who bask in the light of their ill-gotten gains – for them, Power will be akin to a frivolous and temperamental woman – an unreliable woman who is there today and gone tomorrow.  She will become an expert – like a chameleon – in camouflaging her true intentions. She will make herself adept in the “disappearing act.” It will be for such people a question of “easy come; easy go.” They will learn the hard way that Power, Fame and Fortune are as transient and fleeting as vapor – they are like “ships in the night” – for one moment, clearly visible on the edge of the horizon but with the breaking of the first light of dawn they have disappeared completely from sight, as if by pure magic. Were they ever there at all? LEARN TO APPRECIATE WHAT YOU HAVE, LONG BEFORE IT BECOMES SOMETHING THAT YOU HAD.

I remember distinctly a conversation that I had many years ago with the elderly father of a good friend of mine. He expired a couple of years back but he would be pleased to know that his keen student never forgot the essence of his enlightened words and advice – “Power is like a “chair” that you sit on; your power holds sway as long as that chair supports your weight. Don’t misuse the power that this chair gives you. People ought to remember you many years hence, NOT for the chair that you once occupied but for the person that you are.”

Footprints left on the shifting sands of time get swept away in the draughts of the ceaselessly blowing wind BUT footprints left on the heart of a person remain as an indelible mark in their minds forever; your presence should change their lives for the better. You should leave them being better people than when you first met them. Your presence should enrich their lives with the purity of goodness. ALWAYS ENDEAVOUR TO BE SUCH A PERSON. THAT IS TRUE POWER.

False allegations, half-truths, outright lies, deceit and slander have the propensity to create great harm and havoc – AVOID IT. Idle gossip, tittle-tattle and the “rumour-mill” are the venom that many people thrive on. They use it to poison the minds of their fellow-beings against another of their own kind – the main reason being Envy. BEFORE YOU JUMP TO MAKING HARSH AND RASH CONCLUSIONS ABOUT ANOTHER, DO REMEMBER THAT GOD – IN HIS INFINITE WISDOM – GAVE EACH ONE OF YOU EYES TO SEE; EARS TO HEAR; A NOSE TO SNIFF OUT THE TRUTH AND A BRAIN CAPABLE OF JUST REASONING AND CALM JUDGEMENT. NEVER ALLOW OTHER PEOPLE TO SWAY YOUR JUDGMENTS  IF THEY ARE TRYING DESPERATELY TO DO SO, IT IS BECAUSE THEY KNOW THAT THE PERSON WHO THEY ARE MALIGNING IS IN THE RIGHT.

LEARN TO MAKE YOUR OWN JUDGEMENT CALLS – “LOOK” IF YOU MUST; BUT “SEE” WHAT YOU ARE MEANT TO SEE – NOT WHAT OTHER PEOPLE POINT OUT AS BEING TRUE. “HEAR” IF YOU MUST; BUT LEARN WHEN TO SWITCH OFF AND “LISTEN” TO WHAT SEEMED OBSCURE BEFORE BUT WHAT YOU OUGHT TO HAVE HEARD AND REMEMBERED AS BEING PART OF THE BIGGER PICTURE. BE CRITICAL IF YOU MUST; BUT LEARN TO JUDGE OTHERS BASED ON YOUR OWN POWERS OF REASONING, OBSERVATION AND WITH A MIND OF YOUR OWN. ONCE YOU HAVE MADE YOUR JUDGMENTS  BE STRONG AND “STAND UP” FOR WHAT YOU BELIEVE TO BE TRUE AND RIGHT. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE IN BEING DRIVEN BY THE COURAGE OF ONE’S CONVICTIONS, IF YOU CANNOT (OR WILL NOT) STAND UP FOR THEM! Most people tend to agree with me on this point, I’m sure.

Perhaps I can help you further here – let us suppose that a person comes up to you, in a drunken state and says that the colour of milk is black. You will at once dismiss such a notion as being totally ridiculous and you might be rather inclined to shout out to the said drunkard – “Get lost, you prize idiot!” Well, what made you react so violently, may I ask? The reason is simple and evident – milk is white – nothing that one can say or do will make it turn black! Another variety of the “prize idiot” may be inclined to point out to you that a dog roars and a lion barks. Never believe such nonsense blindly – how could it possibly be so? It is like going knowingly against the Laws of Nature. DOGS DO NOT ROAR; THEY BARK. LIONS ARE KNOWN TO ROAR – BUT I AM YET TO HEAR, EVEN FROM THE MOUTH OF AN INNOCENT CHILD THAT THEY BARK! The reason that you tend to ridicule such idiotic gibberish is that we know instinctively in our mind what is true and right.  A very simple but potent piece of advice from me to you is –“ALWAYS USE YOUR “SIXTH SENSE” – YOUR OWN INTUITION, INSTINCT AND GUT FEELING WHEN JUDGING OTHERS. Use your nose, like a ‘sniffer dog’-learn to sniff out the truth of the situation on your own merits and through your own efforts of observation and calm reasoning. Do so independently and without prejudice and coercion to the contrary.

When did you start ‘imagining’ that you needed the “help” and advice of other meddlers? IS IT SO DIFFICULT FOR YOU TO MAKE YOUR OWN JUDGMENTS?  Do I need to shake you violently before you start imbibing this simple logic? BE YOUR OWN JUDGE AT ALL TIMES – it will decidedly make your life easier, in the long run.

“BE PREPARED” – simple words of advice coming from respected leader, Robert Baden-Powell. These words of caution were directed especially to Boy Scouts and Girl Guides from all over the globe but these words have ring of UNIVERSAL TRUTH that can be applied to each one of us. NEVER BE COMPLACENT IN THE FACE OF OVERT DANGER – YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT MISSILE IS AIMED AT YOU FROM THE BEND OF THE CORNER OF THE ROAD. FEAR WILL KEEP YOU WISE AND ALERT TO ALL EVENTUALITIES.

“PLAY THE GAME” – do what you must through fair, just and honest means – always in a sporting spirit of good-will.  Accept both Victory and Defeat with a smile. Let your integrity speak for itself. NEVER TO STOOP TO UNDERHAND DEALINGS TO GET AHEAD OF THE COMPETITION; THE TRUTH IS NEVER FAR BEHIND IN THE RACE AND ONE DAY IT IS CERTAIN TO OVERTAKE YOU.

Finally, remember that you can run but you cannot hide forever. The Truth will inevitably reveal itself when the best-laid plans fall apart. That’s Life – nobody ever said that it is fair. We can not hope to stop people from gossiping idly; what we CAN and MUST control is our reaction to it.

THIS IS NOT A REQUEST. I’M SURE THAT YOU ALREADY KNOW THAT.
