Elvis Aaron Presley was an American singer, musician, and actor. One of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century, he is often referred to as “the King of Rock and Roll”, or simply, “the King”. Presley was an early popularizer of rockabilly, an uptempo, backbeat-driven fusion of country music and rhythm and blues.

Presley’s first RCA single, “Heartbreak Hotel“, released in January 1956, was a number-one hit in the US. He became the leading figure of rock and roll after a series of network television appearances and chart-topping records. His energized interpretations of songs and sexually provocative performance style, combined with a singularly potent mix of influences across color lines that coincided with the dawn of the Civil Rights Movement, made him enormously popular—and controversial.

In November 1956, he made his film debut in Love Me Tender. In 1958, he was drafted into military service: He resumed his recording career two years later, producing some of his most commercially successful work before devoting much of the 1960s to making Hollywood movies and their accompanying soundtrack albums, most of which were critically derided. In 1968, following a seven-year break from live performances, he returned to the stage in the acclaimed televised comeback special, Elvis, which led to an extended Las Vegas concert residency and a string of highly profitable tours. In 1973, Presley was featured in the first globally broadcast concert via satellite, Aloha from Hawaii. Several years of prescription drug abuse severely deteriorated his health, and he died in 1977 at the age of 42.

Presley is one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. Commercially successful in many genres, including pop, blues and gospel, he is the best-selling solo artist in the history of recorded music.He was nominated for 14 Grammys and won three, receiving the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at age 36. He has been inducted into multiple music halls of fame.

“Shall We Dance?” is a 2004 American film that is a remake of the award-winning 1996 Japanese film of the same name, written and directed by Masayuki Suo. The film made its US premiere at the Hawaii International Film Festival.

Plot

John Clark (Richard Gere) is a lawyer with a charming wife (Beverly, played by Susan Sarandon) and loving family, who nevertheless feels that something is missing as he makes his way every day through the city. Each evening on his commute home through Chicago, John sees a beautiful woman staring with a lost expression through the window of a dance studio. Haunted by her gaze, John impulsively jumps off the train one night, and

signs up for ballroom dancing lessons, hoping to meet her.

At first, it seems like a mistake. His teacher turns out to be not Paulina (Jennifer Lopez), but the older Miss Mitzi (Anita Gillette), and John proves to be just as clumsy as his equally clueless classmates Chic (Bobby Cannavale) and Vern (Omar Miller) on the dance-floor. Even worse, when he does meet Paulina, she icily tells John she hopes he has come to the studio to seriously study dance and not to look for a date. But, as his lessons continue, John falls in love with dancing. Keeping his

new obsession from his family and co-workers, John feverishly trains for Chicago’s biggest dance competition. His friendship with Paulina blossoms, as his enthusiasm rekindles her own lost passion for dance. But the more time John spends away from home, the more his wife Beverly (Susan Sarandon) becomes suspicious. She hires a private investigator to find out what John is doing, but when she finds out the truth, she chooses to discontinue the investigation and not invade her husband’s privacy.

John is partnered with Bobbie (Lisa Ann Walter) for the competition, although his friend Link (Stanley Tucci) steps in to do the Latin dances. Link and Bobbie do well in the Latin dances, and while John and Bobbie’s waltz goes well, John hears his wife and daughter in the crowd during the quickstep, and is distracted by trying to find them. He and Bobbie fall and are disqualified, and John and Beverly argue in the parking structure. John quits dancing, to everyone’s dismay.

Paulina, having been inspired by John to take up competing again, is leaving to go to Europe, and is having a going-away party at the dance studio. She sends John an invitation, but he’s not convinced to go until his wife leaves out a pair of dancing shoes that she bought him. He goes and meets Beverly at work, convinces her that while he loves dancing, he still loves her just as much, and they dance. They go to the party and John and Paulina have one last dance before she leaves.

The end scene shows everyone afterwards: Link and Bobbie are now together; Chic, who was actually gay, dances at a club with his partner; Miss Mitzi finds a new partner, and they are happy together; John and Beverly are back to normal and dance in the kitchen; Vern, newly married to his fiancée, dances with her at their wedding; the private investigator that Beverly hired, Devine (Richard Jenkins), starts up dance lessons; and Paulina, with a new partner, competes at Blackpool, the competition that she had lost years before.

Suspicion is a feeling that something might be true. If your friends seem to be keeping a secret from you, you might have a suspicion that they are planning a surprise party for your birthday.

Suspicion can mean the same as hunch or inkling, like when you have a suspicion that your friend is hiding a flower bouquet behind his back. Suspicion comes from the Latin word “suspicere”, or mistrust. That’s why it can mean a general bad feeling about someone or something, like neighbors who regard all new people with suspicion until they get to know them.

Suspicion is the niggling sense of doubt – the feeling of mistrust that just will not go away, no matter how hard one tries to rid one’s soul of it. It is a sense of distrust that goes so deep that it has the absolute capacity to erode personal relationships and it corrodes unfailingly into the basis of Trust itself. Doubt seats itself in the minds of people who are Highly

Insecure; suspicion rules supreme when Jealousy and Over-Possessiveness prevail, especially between couples and partners – whether married or not. As Elvis Presley has rightly pointed out in his songs – “suspicion torments one’s soul.” Doubt, mistrust, misgivings and jealousy are all the faithful workers in the workshop of the Devil – they literally feed on themselves. If you decide to stop feeding the Evil Wolf that lies within your own being, you will see, very soon, how these negative emotions die a quick and natural death. Then, learn to keep things that way – do NOT allow the seeds of doubt to be sown yet another time into your mind!

More often than not, such misgivings, especially concerning another’s fidelity, are unfounded and baseless. As the series of events conspired in the film, “Shall We Dance,” John Clark was not having an extra-marital affair, as his wife, Beverly suspected – he found boundless, simple pleasure and unparalleled joy in, “letting his spirit go free” while dancing. The act of dancing filled a sense of emptiness within his soul – a void of happiness – that he no longer felt in the presence of his spouse. Beverly had little or no time for her spouse; her career was more important to her than the woes on the domestic front. Yet, she was by no means a neglectful wife or mother – on the contrary. that standpoint that all their personal problems and misunderstandings arose. Dancing – on John’s part – was an act of innocent enjoyment and entertainment and certainly did not warrant mistrust or misgivings of any kind – but that is exactly what Doubt has the propensity of doing! Doubt is as poisonous as the venom of Temptation that comes from the bowels of Hell itself – try NOT to give in to its temptation!

In fact, a lot of their marital problems could have been totally avoided, if Beverley had had a trusting nature, in the first place – she ought to have given her spouse “THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT” rather than doubting his loyalty and true intentions.

Insecure people tend to be highly Curious and extremely Inquisitive – to the point where such curiosity is deemed as being insulting and offensive. These insecure feelings stem from basic doubts, mistrust and misgivings for all human beings – regardless of whether such distrust is warranted or not. Insecure people just can’t seem to be able to mind their own business! You will often find them “poking their noses” into the things that ought to be of little or no concern to them. Such people know that they are committing a wrong by “being a little too curious for words” – they know that “curiosity killed the cat” – yet they seemingly just cannot stop themselves from carrying on with such offensive activities.

What is to be done then to counteract Doubt?

In the end, the simple truth is that it all boils down to Discipline. You need to DISCIPLINE YOUR MIND TO THINK AND BEHAVE IN A CERTAIN WAY – IN A WAY THAT IS SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE. ONE’S BEHAVIOR NEEDS TO BE HONED TO A FINE POINT AND SKILFULLY MOLDED IN A WAY THAT IT DOES NOT GO CONTRARY TO THE BASIC NORMS THAT DICTATE ETIQUETTE AND CORRECT BEHAVIOR IN ANY GIVEN SOCIETY.

THE DAY WHEN THE WORLD’S POPULATION LEARNS TO CONQUER DOUBT AND SUSPICION WILL BE THE DAY WHEN JOY, UNITY AND BROTHERHOOD RULE SUPREME.

Doubt, suspicion and mistrust are serious Vices – they go contrary to God’s Love itself. However, we need NOT let these vices survive in the world that we all inhabit. Such distrustful behavior and ways of mistrusting do not depend on other people and their reaction to it; it depends, largely, on YOU and what YOU think is RIGHT and best. THE MOMENT THAT YOU REALIZE THIS SIMPLE TRUTH WILL BE THE DAY WHEN YOU CAN FIND INNER PEACE, FAITH AND THE JOY OF LIVING.
