“Nirbhaya” – before and after the gang-rape in Delhi.
WE MUST MAKE OUR CHOICES CAREFULLY…..LET ME TELL YOU WHY IT IS IMPERATIVE TO DO SO.
A mistake that is committed once is forgivable because we are all mortals and none of us can claim infallibility. Some mistakes are minor and can be remedied relatively easily but other mistakes are so huge and horrific in their enormity that they leave a vast void in the life of the person against whom this error was committed in the first place. This error, in turn, affects all those around this person too. A mistake that is committed more than once is NOT a mistake anymore – we should stop fooling ourselves into thinking that it is so.
Mistakes that are committed more than once – or innumerable times – become our conscious choices. We can choose either TO DO something or NOT TO DO ANYTHING in the matter at hand and sometimes, the choice is so difficult that we choose to do nothing at all about the matter in question.
WHEN WE ARE IN SUCH A STATE OF AMBIGUITY THAT WE DECIDE TO, ” SIT ON THE FENCE” AND DECIDE NOT TO MAKE ANY CHOICE, WE HAVE, IN FACT, ALREADY MADE A CHOICE – to do nothing, or not to react, at all, to the situation at hand. Believe it or not, it is a choice of our very own making. The choices that we make become decisions. Our decisions become attitudes, and to a very large extent, these attitudes determine our actions and current and future behavioral patterns, as a whole. Behaviour that stems from such choices tend to determine how we see ourselves and in a wider context, it determines how the world sees us.
Be careful of the choices that you make today – these choices affect our own lives and drastically affect the lives of all those around us too. A good choice leads to benevolent behaviour and a selfless, kind, caring and helpful attitude. It brings, ” a bright ray of ‘sunshine’ streaming into the windows” of the lives of the people who it touches on a daily basis. It fills their hearts with faith, hope and love. People feel loved and “wanted” because of the choices that we make – a person who has known the meaning of true love can learn to love and respect others that form part of his/her world. A bad or evil choice leads to extensive damage and intense harm and injury on our own lives and those of our families. It leads to immense hatred, rage, bitterness, vindictiveness and makes the perpetrator of such a choice or action vengeful, tremendously violent, insensitive and thoughtless. The perpetrators of crimes feed on the fear and screams of their victims. The victims themselves who survive such evil choices &/or their families lose sight of sanity in their intense rage to see some sort of justice being done.
MOST OF THE EVIL IN THE WORLD TODAY STEMS FROM BASIC SELFISHNESS, ARROGANCE, NARCISSISM AND EGOISM. Nothing will change this fact.
IF PEOPLE JUST CANNOT – OR WILL NOT – BE ABLE TO LOOK BEYOND THE END OF THEIR NOSE AND IF THEY CANNOT – OR WILL NOT – REALIZE THAT THE PEOPLE AROUND THEM MATTER IN THE SCHEME OF LIFE TOO, HOW CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE ANY CHANGE AT ALL – LEAVE ALONE ONE FOR THE BETTERMENT OF HUMANITY? IT IS SIMPLY THIS – “IT NEVER EVER WAS, IS OR WILL BE ABOUT “YOU” ALONE – OTHER PEOPLE MATTER TOO.”
Extreme selfishness leads to a host of negative attitudes and behaviours – where do you think that cruelty, hatred, violence, betrayal, deceit, greed, lust, wiliness, deviousness, callousness and indifference have come from? From the majority of people BEING TOTALLY SELF – CENTERED, SELF-IMMERSED AND SELF – ABSORBED, that’s from where these negative actions come from! Sad but true – every word of it!
I AM SURE THAT YOU KEEP SAYING REPEATEDLY TO THOSE AROUND YOU THAT, “OH, WHY CAN’T THE WORLD CHANGE FOR THE BETTER?” I AM QUITE SURE THAT YOU FEEL YOU ARE ‘SUCH ‘A GOOD SOUL’ FOR THINKING AS SUCH. IT IS ARROGANCE AND ABSOLUTE HYPOCRISY ON OUR PART TO EXPECT THE WORLD TO CHANGE FOR US, WHEN WE OURSELVES HAVE NOT EVEN REMOTELY TRIED TO BE BETTER PEOPLE FIRST OURSELVES!
We NEED to start becoming a BETTER people TODAY – it is NOT an option anymore – IT IS ‘HIGH TIME’ THAT CHANGE FOR THE BETTER STARTED ITS RUN AROUND THE PLANET.
It is time to destroy the old ways and to start a purification process by ushering in a new era of benevolence – this purification process starts NOW whether you like it or not.

Here is how the Lady called, “Justice” has been depicted in the minds of the people since times immemorial.
LADY JUSTICE(Latin “Justitia” is the equivalent of the Roman Goddess of Justice, which is equal to the Greek Goddess Dike) is an allegorical personification of the moral force in judicial systems. The personification of justice balancing the scales of truth and fairness dates back to the Goddess Maat, and later Isis, of ancient Egypt. Justitia is most often depicted with a set of scales typically suspended from her right hand, upon which she measures the strengths of a case’s support and opposition. She is also often seen carryinga double-edged sword in her left hand, symbolizing the power of Reason and Justice, which may be wielded either for or against any party. Since the 15th century, Lady Justice has often been depicted wearing a blindfold. The blindfold represents objectivity, in that justice is or should be meted out objectively, without fear or favor, regardless of identity, money, power, or weakness; blind justice and impartiality.
Why do you think that a Woman has been chosen to play this supremely important role of overseeing the process of Justice? It is simply this – while men have physical strength, women have an all-enduring moral and mental strength that far outweighs the physical strength of any male. A woman is the seat of creation – she carries a fetus in her womb for 9 months before she bears a child for all the world to see. She bears all sorts of trauma, pain and discomfort before, during and after the birth of her child/children. She is the one who keeps the hearth warm and she keeps the home fires burning – without her presence, a house that was previously a home becomes essentially ‘dead,’ desolate and ’empty’ of any feeling or warmth.
She ought to be revered like a goddess OR at the very least, as an equal, but the world seems to have very different ideas in this matter. Every single time that a woman is raped, somewhere in the world, remember that it is “Lady Justice” that you are violating, demeaning, humiliating and raping. How can anyone expect to get justice when the woman called Justice is not revered and respected as she ought to be, in the eyes of the world?
THESE IDEAS HAVE TO CHANGE – starting NOW.
It is no longer an option.
Simple as that.

Among the most reprehensible crimes known to mankind are molestation; sexual assault and battery with intense sadism; incest; rape and gang-rape; pedophilia; necrophilia, murder and cannibalism. These are unspeakable acts of depravity, viciousness and abomination – these crimes are so heinous that they are deemed outrageous, odious and downright evil. Each time that a victim falls prey &/or succumbs to such acts of monstrosity and villainy, she lets out a silent cry for justice.
IF WE, HER FELLOW BEINGS, IGNORE SUCH CRIES FOR HELP AND JUSTICE, WE ARE AS MUCH TO BLAME AS THE ATROCIOUS PERPETRATORS OF SUCH VIOLENCE. WE STAND GUILTY OF APATHY, INDIFFERENCE AND CALLOUSNESS, IF WE DO NOT REACT SWIFTLY AND EFFECTIVELY IN THE FACE OF SUCH REPREHENSIBLE EVIL AND HEINOUS CRIMES.
THE WORLD NEEDS TO UNITE IN ITS ENDURING WAR AGAINST EVIL BECAUSE THERE IS IMMENSE STRENGTH IN NUMBERS.
THE UNDENIABLE FACT OF THE MATTER IS THAT WE ARE ALL WALKING IN POOLS OF BLOOD AND GORE AND LEAVING OUR BLOODIED FOOTPRINTS BEHIND IN THIS TRAIL OF EXTREMELY WICKED AND DEEPLY CRIMINAL, NEFARIOUS ACTIVITIES. THESE BLOODY FOOTPRINTS ARE MADE UP OF INDELIBLE INK THAT CONSISTS OF THE BLOOD OF OUR OWN FELLOW- BEINGS. IF WE DO NOT REACT WITH RAGE AND INTENSE FURY AGAINST SUCH ABHORRENT AND FLAGRANT BEHAVIOUR, THESE FOOTPRINTS WILL FOREVER STAND AS A TESTAMENT OF OUR APATHY IN GOD’S BOOK OF JUDGEMENT. ALL OF US, out of necessity, NEED to REACT NOW – there is ABSOLUTELY NO QUESTION OF LATER in such a circumstance!

One such IGNOBLE CHOICE was made by SIX MEN and it concerned the life of a 23 year old Indian woman called “NIRBHAYA” (“fearless one”) and her male companion. She had recently qualified as a physiotherapist and was working as an intern in a hospital in Delhi, India.
Nirbhaya’s ordeal began when she and her male companion boarded a private bus on Sunday Dec. 16 2012, on their way home from a cinema in Saket, South Delhi and were attacked by six men who were the only other passengers on board. The men initially abused her for being out at night with a man who wasn’t her husband. They then took turns to rape her and beat her with an iron rod, in an assault lasting more than an hour as the bus traveled, the atrocities inside hidden from onlookers by tinted windows and closed curtains.
Medical reports later suggested that the woman suffered serious injuries to her abdomen, intestines and genitals due to the savage assault, and doctors say that the damage indicates that a blunt object (suspected to be the iron rod) may have been used for penetration. That rod was later described by police as being a rusted, L-shaped implement of the type used as a wheel jack handle. According to the International Business Times, a police official said that the youngest attacker “sexually abused his victim twice and ripped out her intestines with his bare hands.” According to police reports, the woman attempted to fight off her assailants, biting three of the attackers and leaving bite marks on the accused men. After the beatings and rape ended, the attackers threw out both the victims from the moving bus. Then the accused allegedly tried to drive the bus over the woman but she was pulled aside by her male friend – just in time. The victims were found by a passerby on the road, partially clothed and unconscious, at around 11 pm. The passerby phoned the Delhi Police, who took the couple to a hospital, where the female victim was given emergency treatment and placed on mechanical ventilation. She was found with only 5% of her intestines left inside of her. One of the perpetrators had later cleaned the vehicle. Police impounded it the next day.
Nirbhaya suffered a heart attack later on and experienced breathing difficulties before doctors decided to send her to Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Hospital, where her parents stayed at her bedside, when she died. Before her death, she managed to give two long interviews to the police and a magistrate and she spoke to her family of her determination that her rapists be brought to justice.
She will be forever remembered and revered, by one and all on this Earth, as one who showed tremendous courage in the face of the darkest side of evil. Nirbhaya’s death has provoked intense public outrage and has sparked innumerable protest marches all over India. The news of such blatant savagery has been broadcast all over the globe and has thrown the world – AT LONG LAST – into turmoil, intense rage and wrath amounting to A CALL FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE RIGHTS OF ALL WOMEN AND A CALL FOR JUSTICE – FROM PROTESTERS ALL OVER THE WORLD.
Can you imagine that in the Face of Such An Extremely Wicked Act of Evil in Its Darkest Avatar, the legislators and the Indian community, at large, is having an intense argument as to whether the barely 18-year-old MINOR referred to as Raju, should be tried in a court of law as a juvenile or as an adult?
It is not for me to pass judgement here but the facts of the case are irrefutable and undeniable– the “minor” has shown irrevocably all the thoughts and actions of an adult; he has WILLFULLY, KNOWINGLY AND PURPOSEFULLY acted like an ADULT and it is more than extremely likely that he was VERY WELL AWARE – BEFOREHAND – of the details of the law concerning the trial of a juvenile in a court of law.
In the matter of the gang-rape of Nirbhaya, Raju’s actions seem likely to being ostensibly PREMEDITATED AND SHOW ALL THE HALLMARKS OF THAT OF A MATURE ADULT. If he is not tried as an adult and if he is not condemned in a court of law as being GUILTY, it will only aid in portraying our own justice system as being exceedingly weak, vulnerable and ineffectual. It is a question of NOT playing into the hands of the perpetrators because it affords them, all the time in the world, to consolidate their case. We all know that any capable defense attorney can turn a case around in favor of the perpetrator of the crime by digging into ‘any one or all’ the LOOPHOLES OF THE LAW.
BY HESITATING AND DITHERING IN THIS MATTER, THE INDIAN JUDICIAL SYSTEM HAS MADE ITSELF A “LAUGHING STOCK” in the EYES OF THE ENTIRE WORLD AND THIS AUTHOR IS NOT ABOUT TO STAND BY AND WATCH IT HAPPEN. IT IS TIME FOR THE LEGISLATORS TO “GET THEIR ACT TOGETHER” WITHOUT FURTHER CONTEMPLATION OR DELAY. IF THIS ‘MINOR’ IS TRIED AS A JUVENILE, he will be released from prison in a few years time and believe me, he will be even more vindictive and vengeful than he is now and he will commit more crimes of such monstrosities that it will become impossible to either control him or criminals/rapists like him.
I HONESTLY WONDER HOW A JUDGE OF THE SUPREME COURT OR THE PRIME MINISTER OF INDIA HIMSELF WOULD REACT IF THE VICTIM CALLED NIRBHAYA HAD BEEN HIS WIFE; OR HIS DAUGHTER; OR HIS SISTER; OR HIS COUSIN? I’M SO SURE THAT THE CONDEMNATION OF EVIL WOULD BE SWIFT AND EFFECTIVE IN SUCH A CIRCUMSTANCE.”
I – your author – am normally proud to be called an Indian – but today, my very own countrymen have forced me to hang my head in shame. Today, I am ashamed to call myself an Indian.

There is no forewarning – her attack is one of intense concentration, incredible speed and victory at the end of the hunt. The Lioness will act fiercely and fearlessly without any hesitation or delay. She will chase her unfortunate prey, at incredible speeds, till she has brought it down – her powerful jaws locked around the neck of the dead animal. She is known to go for the jugular and never misses her target. She is – and always will be – the Queen of the Jungle.
“We are the World; We are the People” and our lives are based on CHOICES and PRIORITIES. For once, let it happen that we all unite, as ONE, in making the RIGHT CHOICE.
LET JUSTICE BE SERVED – very simply because the lives of tens of millions of victims, from all over the world, are at stake here. It could have been YOU, or YOUR WIFE, or YOUR MOTHER, or YOUR SISTER, or YOUR COUSIN or YOUR FRIEND who fought and died that day – let us not forget that. Let Nirbhaya not have died in vain.

IMPORTANT NOTE: It has been my express intention NOT to mention at the beginning that the contents of this blog are highly upsetting and disturbing. I have purposely NOT done so because you can’t hide forever from the harsh realities of Life. I want the world’s audience to realize that if it is only by reading these contents that they feel so upset and horrified at the enormity of the crime involved, maybe it will help you to begin to understand the extreme trauma and intense pain and suffering that Nirbhaya, her male friend and their families have experienced in the last few days – besides the continuing frustration in the delay of justice and dealing with their immense grief at such a tragic loss.
When we are born , we know that we are bound to die some day, but the atrocious crime of such savage violence mentioned above is unforgivable. I want you to understand how the families of such victims live with their grief and trauma for the rest of their lives – they “die” with every day that passes by. The victim might be dead but believe me, they “die” a little, every single day too!
I have chosen to mention the gang-rape of Nirbhaya, not because it is a crime that surpasses all other heinous crimes, on this planet, in its viciousness and violence. It is because Nirbhaya was a fellow Indian citizen, just like me. Her story has been uppermost in my mind and I don’t think that I will ever forget her.
I DEDICATE THIS BLOG TO ALL THE VICTIMS OF HORRIFIC AND HIDEOUS, VIOLENT CRIMES – from all over the globe. LET IT BE KNOWN THAT THIS AUTHOR SYMPATHIZES WITH ALL THESE VICTIMS AND THEIR RESPECTIVE FAMILIES AND LOVED ONES.
THE LIONESS, IN ME, WILL USE RELENTLESSLY “THE POWER OF HER PEN” TO MOVE THE WORLD FROM ITS APATHY TO APPROPRIATE ACTION.
